Frequency of Inspection and testing

The reason for inspection and testing is to determine whether maintenance is required. This is to comply with the EAWR regulations 4-2, that electrical equipment be maintained so as to prevent danger. No rigid guidelines can be laid down as to the frequency of inspection and testing as this will depend on the likelihood of maintenance being required and the consequences of lack of maintenance. factors that may influence the decision as to time periods between inspection & testing are:
  • The environment-equipment installed in an undisturbed, controlled environment such as an office will suffer less damage than equipment installed in an arduous environment such as a factory floor, even though the equipment may be identical in both instances.
  • The user's-if damage to equipment is reported as and when it becomes evident by the users, then hazards will be avoided. On the other hand if equipment is likely to recieve unreported abuse and / or damage, then the risk is increased and more frequent inspection and testing will be required. This may apply to different departments within the same organisation.
  • The equipment construction-the safety of a class I piece of equipment is dependant on it's connection with the earth of the fixed wiring system. If the flexible cable is damaged the connection to earth may be lost. Class II equipment is not dependant on this earth connection for it's sfety.
  • The equipment type-hand-held appliances are more likely to be damaged than fixed appliances. If they are also of class I construction the risk of danger is increased.
So where do we start in determining the period of time between inspection and tests? The following guidelines on initial frequencies of inspection and tests should be followed.
