Foam Fire Extinguishers

The Foam Fire Extinguisher has been specifically developed for fires involving class B materials and is widely available in various sizes ranging from the 1Litre hand held extinguishers right through to 100 litre wheeled trolley units, these larger trolley units are normally used at large petrochemical, chemical, fuel depots or airport sites where large quantities of fire fighting medium are required rapidly.

The foam extinguisher is easily maintained and, like the water, can be refilled after use, although slightly more expensive to refill as it has an additive. A foam fire extinguisher is ideal for various premises and locations as mentioned above and is also available in smaller capacities for places such as cars, taxis, minibuses, buses, ambulances, public service vehicles, caravans, boats and in the home.

The most common type of foam we generally see on a daily basis is the AFFF type (Aqueous Film Forming Foam) foam fire extinguisher, usually seen around offices, corridors, fire exits, warehouses, workshops, garages and to provide cover over fuel storage areas.

The advantages of Foam Fire extinguisher are:
  • The 6 litre version is lighter to lift & carry (when compared to the 9 litre water)
  • It is multi-risk for both classes A & B fires
  • Prevents re-ignition of flammable liquids
  • Effective against obstructed Class B fires
  • Can be applied to liquids in tanks, shielding them from another source of ignition

Applied to fuel fires as either an aspirated (mixed & expanded with air in a branch pipe) or non aspirated form to form a frothy blanket or seal over the fuel, preventing oxygen reaching it. Unlike powder, foam can be used to progressively extinguish fires without flashback.
  • AFFF (aqueous film forming foam), used on A and B fires and for vapour suppression. The most common type in portable foam extinguishers. It contains fluorotensides.
  • AR-AFFF (Alcohol-resistant aqueous film forming foams), used on fuel fires containing alcohol. Forms a membrane between the fuel and the foam preventing the alcohol from breaking down the foam blanket.
  • FFFP (film forming fluoroprotein) contains naturally occurring proteins from animal by-products and synthetic film-forming agents to create a foam blanket that is more heat resistant than the strictly synthetic AFFF foams. FFFP works well on alcohol-based liquids and is used widely in motor sports.
